The Campagnolo Shamal Ultra DB 2WF wheelset has been especially developed for road bikes with disc brakes. The introduction of the Shamal wheelset over 20 years ago marked the beginning of a new era in cycling componentry and wheelworks. The very first "complete wheelset" with every component specifically designed around the other components in order to offer the most efficient and performance oriented solution possible made for a solution that was not only a game changer in terms of performance but also an example so strong that it was able to effect a change in the way the entire market produced wheels.

The Shamal has maintained this prestigious stature amongst racing wheels throughout its long and glorious history as it has continued to evolve and incorporate increasingly sophisticated technologies. The introduction of the disc brake upon the road cycling world gives the Shamal a second chance to establish itself as the quality and performance standard for aluminium racing wheels. This opportunity was met with great enthusiasm from the engineering staff at Campagnolo and the product of their ensuing labor comes in the form of the new standard in aluminium racing wheels for the disc brake equipped road bike: the Shamal Ultra Disc Brake 2-Way Fit wheelset.

Upon first inspection the disc brake version of the Shamal Ultra seems quite familiar as engineers went to great lengths to maintain the characteristic aesthetic of this highly respected and sought after wheel in addition to developing a DB specific wheel that remains true to the performance standard set by its traditional counterpart. Many of the same concepts that make the recently released Shamal Ultra for rim brake such a fantastic and reliable racing wheel have been incorporated into this design, albeit with great care taken to modify every aspect to tailor make each and every one to the unique forces, needs and performances associated with disc brake technology. Just like its rim brake counterpart, the Shamal Ultra DB uses rims with C17 standard to offers a perfect tire-to-rim interface for 25 up to 28 mm tires.

Those tires can be of either the clincher or tubeless variety thanks to the use of 2-Way Fit™ technology, allowing the rider to change between the two standards without the need of any additional equipment besides tubeless valves included with the wheelset. This versatility is achieved by MoMag™ system, yet another technology that carries over from the rim brake version eliminating any and all holes in the outer portion of the rim where it interfaces with the tire. The difference within the rim profile height of each wheel continues in the differentiated profile height between front wheel (24.7 - 26.5 mm) and rear wheel (27.5 - 29.5 mm), whereby in both cases the rotational mass is reduced to a minimum. This is made possible by toroidal core milling, which leaves additional material only where it is absolutely necessary, for example around the nipples to reinforce them. This process keeps weight down, increases reactivity and improves handling.

Perhaps the most characteristic part of the Shamal Ultra wheels through the years has been the Campagnolo exclusive Mega G3™ spoke pattern. This universally lauded system has not only been maintained in the rear wheel of the disc brake version but also incorporated into the front wheel. What was once a symmetrical wheel that needed to handle symmetrical braking forces is now necessarily an asymmetric structure with asymmetric braking forces as the disc is located only on the non-drive side. 21 aluminium spokes anchored by all black anodized self-locking nipples, for both front and rear wheels with 14 spokes on one side and 7 on the opposite have the effect of converting asymmetric force and into a linear and symmetric structure.

The Mega G3™ spoke pattern is laced into an equally elegant and functional hub which includes a series of performance design attributes of its own. Aluminium hub flanges are made with a design that renders the entire unit efficient while keeping weight to a minimum. The front hub goes even further in the direction of weight reduction with the inclusion of a carbon fiber hub shell between the two flanges. Such a solution is not possible as the rear hub must compensate for torque applied in two different directions and therefore uses a complete aluminium structure. High levels of torque derive from pedaling forces applied to the freehub body on the driveside while braking forces applied to the AFS disc on the non-driveside create torque moving in the opposite direction, thus necessitating a solid structure.

Super smooth USB™ ceramic ball bearings keep this wheel rolling without any extra effort and keeping it dialed to perfection is as easy as ever thanks to the adjustment lockring with the microsetting feature. Ex factory it is compatible with 12 mm thru axles - front suited for 100 mm and rear suited for 142 mm O.L.D. The Shamal Ultra DB can be converted to quick release or 12 x 135 mm at the rear wheel with separately available adapters.
Campagnolo has developed an assembly architecture which, compared with a traditional wheel, makes it possible to improve energy transfer, reduce the stress on the spokes on the right and increase transverse rigidity. This is achieved because in G3™ geometry the right-hand side of the rear wheel is fitted with twice as many spokes as the left. The results are a better transfer of the driving torque, better lateral rigidity and a reduction of the stress in the rear wheel spokes. In addition the wheel's responsiveness becomes increased and even at a higher system weight there are no more wheel vibrations. Thanks to the oversize flange G3™ becomes Mega-G3™. This solution allows the increase of the torsional stiffness values even more, to the benefit of the overall responsiveness of the wheel.

USB™ (Ultra Smooth Bearings)
Campagnolo's hubs with USB™ ceramic bearings further enhance not only the wheels' smoothness, but reduce also the weight and the need for maintenance. Perfectly smooth surfaces make a lower friction possible and reduce the loss of power. So all your power will be transferred onto the road. Developed at Campy Tech Lab™, comparative tests have shown that USB™ bearings are 50% smoother than standard bearings.

MoMag™ (Mounting Magnet)
With the help of the patented "Mounting Magnet" the nipples, once inserted inside the rim via the valve hole, are "guided" to the point of connection with the spoke. This simple but ingenious system makes it possible to have a wheel without holes on the upper bridge, but with spokes tensioned by traditional nipples. No holes on the rim means that the rim is uniform at every point, free from stress points or zones of weakness and for the clincher profiles no rim tape is required to the benefit of weight reduction.
